ASTROLOGY 101: RISING SIGNS

In this post, I give a basic understanding of rising signs and how they play a role in your birth chart. Sounds like gibberish? It'll all make sense when you read more!

In this post, I give a basic understanding of rising signs and how they play a role in your birth chart. Sounds like gibberish? It’ll all make sense when you read more!

Something that I’ve really gotten into during quarantine is astrology. To be fair, I’ve always been interested and curious about astrology and my horoscope, but not to this degree! Like most people, I’m obsessed with TikTok and my for you page is just a constant stream of astrology and horoscope content.

By no means am I an expert, but I wanted to share my very novice understanding of astrology to educate, perhaps, but also because I think it’s fun! I’m going to start by going over rising signs because, in my personal opinion, they’re the most important.

Before we get into it, make sure you have your birth chart available. Click here to get one and make sure you know the exact date (obviously), time, and location you were born. Exact time is crucial to understand your rising sign — if you don’t know the time, you won’t get an accurate chart.

Once you’ve put all of that in, scroll down to the two boxes that look like this:

My chart in table form, which we’ll be using for reference in this post and series.

What we’re focusing on today is the sign listed by “I ASC” on the right. That is your rising sign (also known as your ascendant). But before I get ahead of myself, let me explain what your rising sign actually is.

We all know our sun sign based on our birth date, but our rising sign is all about time and location. Your rising sign is the sign that was “rising” on or “ascending” the Eastern horizon on the date and at the time and location of your birth. It’s the sign that’s in your first house (the house of self) of your birth chart.

To put it simply, your rising sign dictates your social personality. In complex terms, your rising sign represents what you look like, your outward style, and your overall approach to life.

Fun fact: Rising signs rotate about every two hours, so when you’re checking your horoscope either in the newspaper, in a magazine, or on an app, you’ll get a more accurate forecast if you check your rising sign’s horoscope and not your sun sign. Try it out and let me know what you think!

So if we’re looking at my tables above, we can see that my rising sign is in Gemini. Here’s a breakdown of all the signs in the ascendant position:

  • If your rising sign is in an air sign like mine (Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius), you are mentally quick, inquisitive, friendly, and prefer to express yourself verbally. You often approach life with the desire to understand the meaning of what or whom you encounter, and that includes being intentional with your movement.
  • If your rising is in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius), you are action-oriented, confident, and often blunt. You often have great vitality and physical energy, especially when striving to make your mark in the world.
  • If your rising is in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn), you are matter-of-fact and tend to focus on the material world. You often have a steadfast approach to life that can be a grounding force (especially during stressful times) for many.
  • If your rising is in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces), you are sensitive, empathetic, and easily influenced by your environment. You often have an approach to life that is deeply rooted in your emotional body.

Share what you’d like to read more about next! Rising signs are my favorite, but moon signs come in second place for me.
